Place the indicator head against the outer circumference of the shaft, then slowly rotate the cutter shaft while observing the deflection of the pointer; the deflection value represents the shaft's runout. To fully assess the shaft's runout, measurements must be taken at a minimum of three locations: the drive side, the center, and the operating side.
axial play in the upper and lower spindles
Place the dial indicator probe against the axial end face of the cutter spindle, apply a certain amount of axial thrust, rotate the cutter spindle, and measure its axial displacement. Be sure to use a one-meter-long wooden rod to locate a fulcrum from which to apply axial force to the cutter shaft. If the dial indicator needle does not deflect while applying force, this indicates that the cutter shaft has no axial play. After taking the measurement, repeat the procedure in the opposite direction.
the runout of the spindle shoulders

Let the dial indicator tip rest on the spindle shoulder and slowly rotate the spindle. After a full rotation, we need to check the deflection value on the dial, which is the runout of the spindle shoulder.
